Research Interests

Dr. Dommel was one of the originators of a computer program for solving electromagnetic transients in power systems. The solution techniques that were developed with his graduate students and colleagues are now used in various “EMTP-type” programs, such as MicroTran, PSCAD, EMTPRV, etc.

He has always been interested in continuing education for practicing engineers. He has taught in many short courses around the world, and edited and published a quarterly EMTP Newsletter from 1979 to 1985, which had subscribers in many countries.

Current Research Projects

  • Modelling of power system components for EMTP solutions
  • Dynamic phasor solutions for slower transients
